Exhibition Text
This project was assigned to me by MIAD (Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design). The purpose of which was to create an album cover for a made up musical artist or group. Wanting to go deeper with my piece, I created the character that is MF Fantastic, a superhero whose biggest villain is his depression and anxiety. The purpose of this was to show that anyone can suffer through the peril that is depression and anxiety. For this I derived inspiration from the album cover of Operation Doomsday by Jason Jagel, his style of the silver age comic book inspired the artistic tone for my piece. I used Buveuse Assoupie by Pablo Picasso for the meaning of my piece as this piece belongs to pablo picasso’s blue period, in which most of his pieces consisted of grieving figures.
Critical Investigation
MF DOOM

For these piece, I used its art style as inspiration. The style of this piece is an homage to the silver age of comics, as it uses solid colors to establish contrasting intensity in the piece which creates the illusion of varying values. For example the piece uses a low intensity green to represent the shadows of the cloak. The typography present within this piece is also reminiscent to that of old comic books being emphasized in the cover as the texture and value of the letters contrast heavily against the other hues. The intention of this piece was an album cover for MF DOOM. A Super villain who uses his devastating rapping capabilities to cause mayhem. It's this universe that was tied to this piece and album that inspired the meaning within my album. As I wanted to create a story for my album cover, which inspired me to create the character of Mr. Fantastic. A broken hero who uses his music capabilities for "good".

This piece known as Femme ivre se fatigue was created by Pablo Picasso during his blue period. The blue period was a response to what was occurring at the time of Pablo Picasso's life. Having suffered through his friends suicide in 1901, as well as his emotional and economic problems. Wanting to express this pain, Picasso switched his palette to be a made up of various greens and blues. He also chose to paint scenes of misery that featured troubled souls such as homeless, beggars and drunks to name a few. It's this way of showing human turmoil that inspired Fantastic. As the portrayal of troubled soul trough blues is what inspired me to use only blues for the figure. As the blues create a sense of dread within my figure, creating an idea of his emotional baggage.

Critique
Upon seeing my piece next to my inspiration one can immediately see the similarities and differences. When compared against Operation doomsday, the biggest similarity is the style. Operation Doomsday recreated the art style from old comics by establishing strong contrast through the use of color alone, as varying intestines of colors are used to either represent shadow or a different object entirely. That same style and artistic elements can be seen in my piece, within the contrast of the intensity and value of the blues within the figure and the contrast between the blues and the bright yellow background. However that's as far as similarities go as when it comes to meaning my piece has little to do with Operation Doomsday. When comparing my piece to Femme ivre se fatigue the most distinct similarity is found within the figure of my piece as the figure within my piece is hunched over staring into nothing while painted in varying shades of blue. This is synonymous to the figure found in Femme ivre se fatigue as it also tells a tale of sorrow through color alone.
reflection
This is one of my best pieces if I do say so myself. I feel that I accomplished in bringing the elements of art present within my inspiration and bringing them into my piece. Does it accomplish the initial purpose of being an album cover? I think it does, the composition and balance of the piece not only increases tension within the piece but it also grabs the attention of viewers something that is necessary within my album. If I were to dislike one thing, it would be the typography as it's sloppiness ruins the unity of the piece.
Connection to ACT
1. Q: Explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationship between your inspiration and it's effect on your artwork
A; By looking at them from side to side, I was able to see the elements of art that were present in my inspiration on my piece. I wanted to create vibrant piece that reflects on the use of color throughout inspiration.
2. Q:What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
A: It tries to find beauty in the expression of pain and suffering within art.
3. Q: What kind of realizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
A; Sometimes the first Idea is the best one sometimes its not
4. Q: What was the central Idea or theme around your inspirational research?
A: The central idea of my inspirational research was to show the sorrow of humanity as its portrait of figures that are sad
5. Q: What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
A: That people are always curious about the unknown and that many are willing to go great lengths to find out. The small things they want known maybe as small as wanting to know what time is it or as big as what will the world look like in future
