The intentions of my piece is to demonstrate frustration as something that one must go through their journey for achieving a desire. For this piece I used Jeremy Halverson's Tears that Fuel Education, and Cindy Sherman's Untitled #92 as inspiration. I used Tears That Fuel Education as inspiration for my piece as it also communicates the hardships of education. As for Untitled #92 I used it as inspiration for my art medium and artistic execution. Every object within this shot was bought and placed in a certain way for the shot.

Tears That Fuel Education was created by Jeremy Halverson. Another art student, and friend of mine. This was created through digital manipulation, using a software called GIMP. This piece showcases a figure, hunched over and crying over pieces of homework. Tears That Fuel Education establishes emphasis trough color and contrast of various shapes. I took inspiration from the way this piece's composition. As the hunched figure communicates strong body language of frustration and despair, it was this that inspired me to shape my piece the way it is. But most importantly this piece was created to convey frustration and perseverance. Frustration over homework, and the tears that fuel one's willingness to push through the frustration. I derived the inspiration of my piece from this. As my piece's purpose is to show frustration, a hazy frustration, as if someone was looking back at the frustration they had to go through to be where they are now.
Untitled #92 was taken by Cindy Sherman. Cindy Sherman is a photographer that specializes in staged photography. These pictures are created through careful planning, Every set piece is used/done in a certain type of way, so that it only heightens the meaning and execution of her photographs. Untitled #92 features Cindy Sherman in a school uniform, with wet hair, in a kneeling down position. Her gaze looking beyond the camera with light illuminating her front and side. It's this arrangement of set pieces, that help this photograph convey a story. This inspired me to try to achieve this form of photography, within my piece. I arranged certain set pieces and arranged certain scenes for the creation of my piece. |
Inspiration
This Image I used as reference on how to illuminate the small section in which I'm going to take my picture. with the light source coming from the upper right side of the space.

This is for the lay out of my "props". I bought a small table from goodwill which will be the centerpiece of my props. Old pieces of homework and, textbooks shall be arranged on top of desk

This describes the position and attire of the figure. For beginners the posture of the figure must be hunched over in a exhausted position, as for the attire the figure must wear, it should be a school uniform.

Process
I began creating my piece setting up by clearing out the occupied space that was needed. Once that was done, I transferred my table and chair into my selected space. Then I carefully arranged sheets of paper, and textbooks on top my table to create the scenery for my photograph. I first had planned to use myself as the figure within my photograph. But in the end I decide to The next step was figuring out the lighting. Since I was goin to take the picture indoors, I had multiple ways on how to adjust the lighting within my pictures. I wanted my picture to have contrasting values so I went to the store and bought white light bulbs. But the results were very bright with not too much difference between values. So I went out and bought, warm light bulbs and the result was the opposite of the white light bulbs. The warm light bulbs made my pieces darker than wanted. So with no other option I experimented with meanly source of light to be the flash within my camera. This resulted in a slightly brighter photos than the ones taken with the warm light bulbs. However I still wasn't happy with the feeling the photograph conveyed. That's when something from the basement caught my eyes, a red translucent topper wear lit, and a bright orange translucent cup. Having tried almost everything, i decided to place the orange translucent cup in front of the white light bulb, This gave the light an orange tint which in turn gave my photograph an bright orange tint. Content with the results, I took it one step further by placing the red translucent lid in front of the light as well, this gave the light a red-orange tint, which I found perfect for my photograph. While I found the lighting great, and as well as the composition of my picture. However, I felt it was missing this "BANG" to it. Figuring that I've done everything with my setting I began to experiment with my camera and it's settings. there was a camera setting

Critique
Upon comparing my photograph against my inspiration, one is able to see the influence of my piece. This influence is clearly seen more with Tears that Fuel Education, My piece has a figure slumped over crying, like the figure within Tears that Fuel Education. My piece shares meaning with Tears That Fuel Education, as my piece tries to showcase frustration as a necessary step to success. Likewise Tears that fuel tells us to use our frustration as a fuel for our eagerness at achieving success. However the emphasis of Tears that fuel education is the tears, as their intensity draws our eyes towards them as it contrasts against the low values of the grays that make uptake piece. For my piece emphasis is established through the faint figures if the
Reflection
I learned a lot about photography through this piece. Having done a little bit of photography during last summer, I wanted to go deep into what photography could be. Having attended some classes at MIAD and through research I learned that photography big component is light. Light is everything in photography as it not only decides the quality of the image but the value, mood, and unity of the piece.
