Exhibition Text
The purpose of this piece was to give a glimpse to the life of many people within the south side community. People who work day in and day out at a job society considers humiliating. For my piece I used Massacre of the Innocents as inspiration for the meaning in my piece and I used blue segment for the style of my piece.
Research
. Within this piece was created by Peter Paul Rubens. and it depicts the biblical tale of the massacre of the innocents in Bethlehem. Rubens was an artist from the baroque movement. A movement that focused on the exaggeration of humans as well as establishing drama and movement into their pieces. Rubens used movement of the figures in this piece to establish movement within the piece itself. The piece also uses various tones to highlight certain part of the painting, which increases the tension and drama found within the piece. The meaning of this piece was to create a rendition of the biblical tale that was the massacre of the innocents. In this tale the king of Judea (king Herod) who wanting to kill the newborn king of the Jews, orders the massacre of all male children under two years old. Its this complex story that is interpreted within a single piece that inspired me.

Kandinsky, Wassily. Blue segment
|
This piece is titled Blue Segment. This piece was created by Kandinsky Wassily who was an abstract artist. Abstractionism was to show what the real world wouldn't show. While a realistic image can show the truth of the world, it can't show the various lines, organic shapes, the unnatural vivid colors that are found within abstract art. It was this use of colors, shapes, and lines that inspired me to create an abstract piece as I also wanted to use organic lines and surreal colors to tell a story

Process
First I began by gessoing my canvas, For this piece, I wasn't required to build a canvas as I used a pre-made canvas that wasn't being used. Once I gessoed my canvas It was time for me to begin painting. But before painting I made up my mind to experiment with this piece. Having been giving a brief lecture on color theory I set out to only use Red, Blue, Yellow and White. Once with that established I began to paint my background. For the background I used two parts Red and Two parts yellow to create an even orange, I then added one part blue and one part white which turned the orange into a soft brown. Once I had my background done It was time for me to begin drawing the figure in my piece. I started witch a big oval made from pure white. To which I then added a blue gradient with a horse hair brush which I then used to scratch on diluted blue paint to the oval which resulted in the water color like gradient. By mixing blue with a dash of yellow and white which created an aqua color which I then used for the head and the left arm of my figure. For the second half of my head I combined one part yellow and one part blue to create a solid green which then I used for the second half of the head and the stool. This same process is used for every limb and shape within my piece. Most impressively the gray of the dishwasher was created by only using the aforementioned four colors. I did this by mixing yellow, red, and blue to create a deep black hue, of which i then added white to create the gray I found necessary

Critique
When comparing and contrasting my piece against my inspiration, my piece seems to have nothing in common with the Massacre of the Innocents. As the baroque found in Massacre of the Innocents no direct elements of design apart from movement. But where there is similarity is in the meaning as one can look at Massacre of the Innocents and know that there is a story for this. This is exactly the same for my piece as the disfigured shape of a person sitting with machinery in the background make the viewers question what is his story. Compared against Blue Segment my piece has more in common as the vibrant colors that are in Blue Segment are also in my piece, not only that but the lines and tone of the piece is also found in my piece.
Reflection
I was dissapointed with what I created at first.I found myself thinking that I had creating something that wouldn't even classify as "Art". But after visiting the Abstractionist ideology I found myself being contempt with what I created, as it is not about how the piece look but rather what is in the piece that make it abstract, The vivid colors found within other abstract pieces are also found in mine. This made me grow my perception in art as truly anything can be art. However If I were to make things differently I would chanfge the color of the background as I feel that it takes away from the unity of my piece.
