Exhibition Text
The purpose behind ICE is to bring attention to the issue that is the detaining of undocumented immigrants, and the devastating affects that come with the detentions. Such as the separation of families, fear, and hopelessness. ICE was inspired by Milton Glaser's Dylan, and by Georgia O'Keeffe's Series 1 - no. 2. Everything that composes my piece is self made. I used Dylan as a guide for the balance, contrast of my piece. While I used Series 1 - no. 2 as a guide for the texture I wanted as well as the sketch like style of my illustration.
Research
For ICE I used Milton Glaser's Dylan, and by Georgia O'Keeffe's Series 1 - n o. 2 as inspiration. Dylan was a poster commissioned by CBS records which would be featured in the upcoming Bob Dylan Greatest hits album. The image consists of a black silhouette of Bob Dylan on top of a beige background. His iconic curly hair is decorated with bright colors. these bright colors. These bright colors help create emphasis, balance and contrast within the piece. The height value and intensity of the hair, creates emphasis as the addition of color makes that segment stand out. It also establishes balance as the bright colors of the hair contrast against the beige and the black creating a balance between the colors.
Series 1 - no.2 is an oil painting done by Georgia O ́Keeffe. Georgia O ́Keeffeis regarded as one of the most influential american artists of the 20th century. She was a pioneer in the american abstract artistic movement. She sought to communicate her ideas, thoughts, and feelings through abstract use of shapes, style, and color. Series 1 - no.2 consists of a depiction of a flower painted with oil paints that has a sketch aesthetic. I planned to incorporate the use of color within Series 1 - no.2 into my piece

Planning
Coming back to this piece with a fresh new start I had an idea of what I wanted my piece to be, and what not to be. This was the design for this stage. This sketch shows two hand cuffed to one another. While I liked the premise, I knew that It could be better. So as a result I got rid of the handcuff and made the hands reach for one another.

Process
First I began my process by taking some reference pictures. Wanting to simulate a view of a parent and child reaching for one another I used both my sisters hands to get an accurate form for the hand. While this step was an essential part for the creation of my piece. I felt that this step could have been improved upon. As the reference pictures I took weren't in a well lit area and the hand seemed to fade into the background. Once I had my arms images for reference, I began to transport them into my piece. The paper I was using was not large enough to make both arms straight. As a solution I had to tilt both hands in order to get them to fit nicely into my illustration paper. Once I finished transporting my images I began to color in the arms. Wanting to capture the different values that can be seen in my images. To create this gradient in value, I utilized a technique in where I lay down a tone of a color then to overlap other darker tones to create the gradient. For one of my hands I used this technique with warm color, as for the other hand I used the same technique but with cool colors instead. This provided me with great satisfaction, as just like O'keeffe and Glaser I was able to establish texture, emphasis, balance and unity trough the special use of color. Despite this, there was no strong contrast within my piece, as the light colors seemed to blend into the background. To solve this problem I used comprised charcoal to create a solid background for my piece.

Critique
My piece is a perfect combination between my inspirations. Dylan establishes contrast and emphasis through color. By using vivid colors against a black and white background. In a similar way my piece establishes contrast and emphasis in a similar way, as the bright color of the arms brings a viewers attention to that specific area and it contrasts beautifully against the dark black background. The sketch like aesthetic and texture of Series 1 - no.2 is also present within my piece.

Evaluation
I am happy in how this piece turned out, During this senior year i've been wanting to push myself, not just for a challenge. But rather to demonstrate my growth since junior year, as well as to enhance my artistic skills. I also feel that this is one of my best pieces as the meaning of my piece is greatly communicated, which is what Art is all about.
