Exhibition Text
For Tales of the Rosemary Lover, I wanted to tell the story of my grandfather, and all the jobs he had to take in order to feed his family when first immigrating to the US. All the objects used in the creation of this piece were found within the walls of my home. The overall composition, and form is derived from the piece Paint Pot Angel by Banksy, and from the piece 0121-1110=1080616 by Lee Jaehyo
Critical Investigation
For The Jobs of the Rosemary Lover, I was inspired by Banksy’s Paint Pot Angel and by Lee’s 0121-1110=114028.. Paint Pot Angel was created by Banksy, Banksy is an anonymous british artist who specializes on street art, heavily influenced by politics and social injustice. Paint Pot Angel is a sculpture that consists of a beautifully carved stone angel with a can of bright pink paint dumped on his head. The can of the Bright pink paint is what caught my attention as the paint causes a stark contrast against the angel, the trip of the placement of the streaks of paint also gives the sculpture movement as it guides our eyes down the sculpture. I wanted all of these components within my piece. As for 0121-1110=114028, it was created by Lee Jaehyo, a korean sculptor who uses mundane objects such as wood and nails, and transforms them into highly polished sculptures. 0121-1110=114028 is a collage that features values and forest entirely composed of steel nails. Lee’s use of nails bring texture, repetition, and repetition to his piece, like before I wanted these aspects in my piece
At first I wanted to create a piece that spread awareness about climate change. Using my inspiration i came up with this. each section of the mushroom cloud was made of a material that reflected an industry that negatively impacted the government like plastic soy and cotton. But once i started to actually build my idea i didn't like the aesthetic of it so i scrapped it away and started over again

It was during my cousins birthday that I was able to hear my grandfathers life story for the 5th time. But no matter how much I hear it I never grow tired the way he describes his hardships of coming to america with nothing and taking up multiple jobs inspired me to create this. the pain bucket and paint roller signifies the job he had as a painter, the nails represent his job as a dry wall installer.

Experimentation
|
|
For experimentation I decided to vary the earthiness of most of my materials. I used a combination of rusted and non rusted metals throughout my piece. This would create a contrast of texture between both types of material. For experimentation I also played around with my invironments,I used lanterns and white panels to create what would become my studio for taking pictures

Process
Firstly I began by finding a paint covered paint roller, and cleaning it with sand paper to the best of my abilities. Then I would wrap my twenty dollar bill around the roller and hold it in place using clear tape. Having done the paint roller I then moved to making the can. Going through my basement I found a decent looking can covered in stains which I fixed y taking off the labels of the pain can and scrapping any excess paint using sandpaper. Once done, I grabbed a sheet of printing paper and taped it unto my paint can. What would come next was to design the outlines of the spilled paint. Once the outlines are done I would glue either nuts, bolts or nails unto the outlines. Once having the outline done I would start to fill in from top to bottom row with more nuts and bolts. To fill in the holes i tried my best to fill it to completion using only nails, but eventually small spaces were left behind and I was forced to use bolts and nuts to fill in those spaces. I would then set a large sheet of paper on top of my workplace and place my bucket on top of it and stylelize it with my roller. Once having the positions of the roller and paint can. I began to lay out flat disks to the position of the the roller and can. I experimented with it a little as I started out with multiple layers close to the can which then became thinner the more farther it got away from the paint can. Then I would continue to establish background and lighting to my studio,
Critique
Compared and contrasted against Paint Pot Angel, We don’t seem to compare against one another in a meaningful aspect. But the relationship shines on the technical aspect, as we both seem to establish contrast in our pieces, I establish contrast using rusted nuts and nails, While Paint Pot Angel establishes contrast using color I took a completely different approach. Another thing we have in common is that our piece seems to establish movement through the means of traces of paint. As for Lee’s 0121-1110=1080616, the big similarity is that both pieces have nails showing us the use of repetition and that art doesn’t have to made from expensive materials. On the other hand we try to bring the message but thorough different means, I use the basic concept and shape a nail, compare this to Lee’s 0121-1110=1080616 has a more intricate placement pattern of nails the different textures he applied to the nails
Reflection
Overall this might have been the most difficult piece I had this semester, either I was indecisive on my ideas or the creative juices weren’t flowing but I was never satisfied with the premise I came up with, and before I knew it the big day of critique was a week away, so I thank my grandad for telling me his stories which would become the main meaning of my artwork. Honestly I feel like more could be done for it as I believe the premise and overall execution wasn't bad in general, but I felt that more could be done for this piece I plan to come back to this in the future and properly execute the ideas for this piece
